History

Casa Ouro D'Alva

Built in the 18th century by the Barreiros family, the house was sold in 1909 to a nephew, Dr. José de Almeida Barreiros Tavares, who served as Provedor of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia and held the professional roles of Notary and Registrar of Civil Records for the municipality of Penalva do Castelo, formerly known as Castendo, and to his wife Mrs. Julieta Leite Figueiredo Barreiros, known as the "Poetess of the Beiras". The house had the joy of witnessing the birth of the couple's ten children.

In 1929, the house had the misfortune of being destroyed by a violent fire, but it was rehabilitated with the help of the village community, which promptly showed solidarity with the owner, a person who was very beloved and respected in the area.

In 1962, the house became the property of the heirs, the couple's children, and was inhabited by those who dedicated their lives to the service of the Church, as Canons, Priests, and Nuns. A room was also made available for teaching, with tutoring to help the children of the municipality.

From 1972 to 1991, the offices of the transportation company Bernardinos were installed on the ground floor and basement, later known as Bernardinos and Berrelhas, now Empresa Berrelhas de Camionagem Lda. and were still used for the receipt and delivery of goods from and to all over the country.

In 1992, the house was converted into a condominium and partially acquired by the banking institution Caixa Geral de Depósitos, which undertook expansion and remodeling works to install one of its branches. In the 2000s, it acquired the first floor and attic, a portion designated for housing.

In 2019, the company A L Oliveira e Filhos Lda acquired the residential and rustic portions, undergoing a licensing process which, in conjunction with ELS - Lodging Services, Lda, led to an expansion and remodeling to install six apartments, with T0, T1, and T2 typologies, and a restaurant spread over two floors.

In 2024, the Local Accommodation "Casa Ouro D`Alva" was born for guests who appreciate the refinement and tranquility of a welcoming space with breathtaking landscapes in the heart of the Dão region, where different elements unite in perfect symbiosis for unforgettable days.
